What is Hypnobirthing?

Hypnobirthing is about birthing with knowledge, support, tools and preparation and focuses on the mind-body connection that has been around for thousands of years. It is a birthing philosophy that empowers a mother to birth her baby with confidence and trust. It aims to restore the belief that women are made to birth, that everything needed for birth is within and that if women are successful in releasing and letting go of their fears, they are more likely to achieve their birthing goals just by trusting their bodies!

The Hypnobirthing Australia™ course aims to empower mothers to make educated choices and navigate the Australian medical system. As mothers become well informed, make confident decisions and prepare their minds and bodies leading up to birth, their confidence is likely to grow and their fear, if they have any, lessens – giving room for a positive birthing experience.

A common question is “what is the ‘hypno’ part of ‘hypnobirthing’?” The answer is that hypnotherapy is used during pregnancy and birth to release fears and condition mothers (and their birth partners) to best prepare them for their positive, calm and empowered birth. Essentially, hypnosis is a very normal, relaxed and natural state of being. Think about when you are driving a car, reading a book, watching a movie or even falling asleep. Hypnosis is an intense state of mindfulness, being completely present yet receptive with all your senses ‘on’.

A recent study in 2016 confirmed that independent childbirth education which includes relaxation, breathing, meditation, massage and acupressure is shown to greatly decrease interventions in childbirth.  The Hypnobirthing Australia™ program incorporates ALL of these things – giving mothers and their partners a substantial advantage in their preparation for childbirth.
